A by-the-numbers techno-thriller with a rock-solid throbbing undercurrent of homoeroticism that somehow never explodes across the screen. One can only assume this is the result of executive interference under the prudish eye of whatever out-of-touch cultural necropolis of studio produced it (Disney? MGM?). The director's cut, if it exists, must surely be one of the great postmodern Eros–Thanatos masterpieces of the 20th century, on par with Fassbinder's Querelle. I suppose we'll never know…
